Small Business Status in Georgia: How the 1% Regime Works

The 1% tax rate is one of the main reasons freelancers and small businesses choose Georgia — but it's not automatic, and it's not for everyone.

In Georgia, anyone registering as an Individual Entrepreneur can apply for Small Business Status, which reduces the tax rate to 1% on income up to roughly 500,000 GEL per year (around 200,000 USD). Without this status, an Individual Entrepreneur is taxed at 20% under the standard regime.

How to Get It

Registering as an Individual Entrepreneur and applying for Small Business Status are two separate steps: you register first, then apply for the favourable status with the Georgian Revenue Service. It's not an automatic benefit.

Who Can Access It

You don't need Georgian citizenship or permanent residency. Some activities, however, remain excluded from the regime — typically those subject to a special licence, financial, legal, tax consulting, medical and auditing services. If your activity falls into one of these, you can still register as an Individual Entrepreneur but you'll be taxed at 20%, not 1%.

What Happens If You Exceed the Threshold

If your annual turnover exceeds 500,000 GEL, the rate rises to 3% from the month you exceed it until the end of the year. The following year you automatically return to 1%, unless you exceed the threshold again.

Filing & Deadlines

Payment is monthly, with a filing due by the 15th of the following month with the Revenue Service.
